High noon on July Fourth in the quiet town of Longley, New York, and it's got to be one hundred degrees. Thankfully, sisters Bernie and Libby are setting up their yummy catering out of the sun in the gazebo for the reenactment of The Battle of Meadow Creek--and not baking in those Revolutionary War uniforms with their fellow townspeople . . .

After a few cheery exchanges of "Moveth" and "Thou speakest treason," the muskets are fired and the fake battle is over. But the blood on notorious town playboy Jack Devlin looks very real. Is it possible that Jack has had his last tryst?

When town councilman and resident loudmouth Rick Evans fingers Bernie's beau Marvin as the killer, Bernie and Libby know they've got to get cooking on the case. But the former Casanova has burned half the town--including the hot-headed politician and his occasionally faithful wife. And what about re-enactor Elise Montague, who is training to be an EMT yet almost fainted at the sight of blood on the deceased?

Bernie and Libby have their plates overloaded with suspects, and will need to work very fast to clear Marvin's name. The simmering killer is still out there, armed and taking shots, and unless the sisters quickly get to the bottom of this patriotic pre-meditation. . .their goose may be cooked!

In Crawford’s diverting 10th mystery featuring catering sisters Bernie and Libby Simmons (after 2013’s A Catered Christmas Cookie Exchange), the big draw of the Fourth of July extravaganza in Longely, N.Y., is a reenactment of a Revolutionary War battle with authentic uniforms and equipment. The replica muskets are, of course, not functional—with the exception of one prepared especially for use by womanizer Jack Devlin. When the musket explodes on firing and kills Devlin, attention focuses on Libby’s beau, Marvin, who was in charge of providing the weapons, despite there being no dearth of more likely suspects. The police won’t look elsewhere even after someone shoots at Marvin’s car, so Bernie decides she and Libby must find the real killer before Marvin ends up in prison. Scorned women, jealous husbands, Wiccans, and Hilda the pet pig add to the cozy fun. Agent: Evan Marshall, Evan Marshall Agency.

Sisters and owners of A Little Taste of Heaven, Bernie and Libby are catering the reenactment of the Revolutionary War Battle of Meadow Creek on July Fourth in Longely, New York, when Jack Devlin's musket blows up in his face, killing him. When it looks like Libby's boyfriend, Marvin, who was in charge of the costumes and props, will soon be arrested for murder, the sisters, along with their father, the former Longely police chief, and Bernie's boyfriend, Brandon, set out to clear him. Since Devlin was a philanderer, there are multiple suspects, ranging from angry husbands to scorned women. Framed with scenes of food preparation and sales, and supported by the richly portrayed relationship between the sisters and their widowed father, this satisfying cozy will appeal to fans of Joanne Fluke's Hannah Swensen mysteries and Chris Cavender's Pizza Lovers series. The book concludes with a selection of recipes.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2014, American Library Association.)
